Fought over the first three days of July in 1863, the battle for Gettysburg proved to be the high tide of the Confederacy and the turning point of the American Civil War. Napoleon created the Imperial Guard as an army within an army. To gain access to its hallowed ranks was the dream of many French soldiers. Better pay, food, uniforms and a swagger that carried them all over Europe - it was a post of great honour and they worshipped their Emperor. They were far from being palace guards however as long and active service made them crack soldiers who could be relied upon to get the job done.This plastic set contains enough troops to field three Guard battalions (80 soldiers in each) with accompanying mounted officers. Old Guard are recognizable by the brass plate on front of their bearskin hats and the rear patch atop them. The Middle Guard bearskins didn't carry the brass plate or rear patch so these can be painted over as if fur. We have added a few extra heads; those who wish to further differentiate their units can replace some of them with the shako or the bonnet to convey the poorer supplied Middle Guard although it isn't mandatory!Also included are units of Marines of the Guard (30 soldiers) and Engineers of the Guard (30 soldiers). These add a further dash of colour and variety to the French army. To cover the Guard in the attack Napoleon fielded 'His lovely daughters', large 12-pounder cannon, crewed by excellent gunners and which could reach out further than most Allied guns. Arguably the best shock cavalry of the period, the British heavy cavalry showed great bravery but poor control on the day of Waterloo. These heavy cavalry smashed the French columns to pieces but, due to their poor leadership, they were destroyed by the French in turn. There were two heavy cavalry brigades, the Household division with four regiments and the Union Brigade with three. To give close support the Royal Horse Artillery attached to them field fast-moving, deadly 6-pounder guns. These are 'Noseys' men - solid battalions of redcoats who would stand firm at Quatre Bras and Waterloo. Disciplined, tough and all volunteers, they had high confidence in themselves and their officers, and held the crucial ridge all day long against a brave and determined enemy. These plastic figures can be painted as British line and Guards regiments or Kings German Legion. With a minor modification these will work as the brave blue-tuniced Belgians. A Colonel on horseback is included for each unit and a 9-pounder Royal Artillery battery to engage the enemy at long range with a hail of shot and shrapnel. After Napoleon entered Paris and started the Hundred Days campaign, King William II of Prussia recalled Blucher from his retirement in Silesia and set him the task of facing down the upstart Frenchman. He was placed in command of the Army of the Lower Rhine and quickly marched west to join the Anglo-Dutch allies, hoping to consolidate their forces.Unfortunately, the Prussian army was hastily assembled and pressed into the field ill-equipped and poorly trained. Over a third of the force was Landwehr (militia), some of which marched barefoot to war. At the Battle of Ligny the Prussian army faced Napoleon directly and was roundly beaten, Blucher himself being trapped injured under his dead horse for hours. A casual look at Tommy Atkins of the Victorian period gave little away about his fighting abilities. Standing 5´5" on average, and often shorter, he may or may not be able to read or write. This appearance was deceptive, however. Huge numbers of cavalry were fielded in the warfare of the 17th century. The most common being light cavalry harquebusiers, armed with doglock carbines which could be fired from the saddle. Parliament cavalry initially relied on pistols rather than an all-out charge with cold steel, as favoured by the dashing Royalist cavaliers, though by war's end full blooded charges were the norm.Cuirassiers were rare in the English Civil Wars, limited to only a few squadrons of mainly bodyguards. Individuals would wear what armour was available no matter its antiquity and can be mixed into harquebusier regiments.
